The April Finance Reset: 10 things to tidy up after year-end

April always feels like a fresh start. The new tax year is here, the year-end rush has (mostly) calmed down, and you've got a small window to get your finances back into a tidy, stress-free place.

If you're a business owner whos been meaning to sort the books but keeps getting pulled back into the day-to-day, this is for you.

Below are 10 practical, non-overwhelming checks you can do now to set yourself up for a smoother year.

1) Get your bookkeeping up to date (even if it's just the basics)

You don't

need perfection. You need current.

·      Reconcile your bank accounts

·      Make sure sales and expenses are entered

·      Upload receipts (or at least gather them in one place)

When your books are behind, everything else becomes guesswork.

2) Separate business and personal spending (starting today)

If youve been dipping in and out of the same account, youre not alone. But it makes your accounts harder, slower, and more expensive to sort later.

·      Use a dedicated business bank account

·      Use one business card for business spending

·      If you’ve mixed things up, note whats personal so it can be coded correctly

3) Check your subscriptions and silent costs

April is a great time to cancel what you dont use.

·      Software subscriptions

·      Phone contracts

·      Tools and memberships

·      Storage units, vans, equipment hire

A quick review can save more than you think.

4) Make sure youre charging VAT correctly (if youre VAT registered)

VAT mistakes usually arent dramatic in the moment. They become painful later.

·      Are you applying the right VAT rate?

·      Are you claiming VAT only where you should?

·      Are you keeping VAT receipts where needed?

If you're not sure, it's worth checking now rather than fixing it under pressure.

5) If you're in construction: do a CIS health check

CIS admin can spiral fast when its not kept on top of.

·      Verify subcontractors correctly

·      Ensure deductions are applied properly

·      Keep a clean record of invoices and statements

A tidy CIS process protects you from fines and awkward conversations.

6) Review payroll and staff records (even if you only have one employee)

Payroll is one of those areas where nearly right can still cause issues.

·      Check pay rates and hours are correct

·      Confirm starter/leaver details are up to date

·      Make sure contracts and policies are stored properly

If you’ve grown recently, this is especially important.

7) Create a simple monthly money routine

You dont need a 20-step process. A repeatable 3060 minute routine is enough.

For example:

1.        Reconcile the bank

2.        Upload receipts

3.        Check overdue invoices

4.        Put money aside for tax

Consistency beats intensity.

8) Know what you need to set aside for tax (so it doesn't bite later)

One of the biggest causes of stress is getting to a deadline and realising the money isnt there.

·      Put aside a percentage each month

·      Keep it in a separate savings pot

·      Review it quarterly if your income fluctuates

If you want help choosing a sensible percentage, we can guide you based on your numbers.

9) Get your admin organised (so you can find things in 30 seconds)

This isnt about being neat. Its about saving time.

·      One folder for invoices

·      One folder for receipts

·      One folder for payroll/HR

·      One folder for contracts and key documents

Cloud storage plus a simple naming system makes a huge difference.

10) Decide what you're delegating this year

This is the real reset.

Ask yourself:

·      What admin jobs drain your time every week?

·      What do you avoid because its stressful?

·      What would you happily pay to never think about again?

Bookkeeping, payroll, HR admin, compliance, and even 24/7 call handling can all be taken off your plate.
